ANDI

BEFORE

Jeremy Rundle’s bike was chained to the staircase when Andi got home. She knocked on his door.

There was movement inside and what sounded like a lot of locks being undone before the door opened a crack and Jeremy peered out. His eyes bugged out when he saw her. The crack got bigger, and she saw that he was kind of rumpled looking, with messy hair and a T-shirt that had never met an iron.

“Andi?” The word ended on a high note, like he was asking a question. Or maybe he was just really surprised to find her on his doorstep.

“Hi, Jeremy,” she said. “I got your note. Sorry I missed you.”

He appeared confused for a moment, and she wondered if he’d been napping and wasn’t fully awake yet. Then a light bulb went on and he said, “Oh yeah, the note. That’s right, I have something important to show you.”

He stared at her, and she thought maybe he was high instead of sleepy.

“So . . . what did you want to show me?”

He opened the door all the way. “It’s on my cell phone. Do you want to come inside?”

Andi really didn’t want to go inside. He noticed her reluctance and did a weird laugh. “Heh heh, it’s okay. I’m not a serial killer. Promise.”

Like he would tell her if he was.

She followed him inside. It was the first time she’d been in his apartment. The layout was identical to her own, but that’s where the similarities ended. Hers was light and airy, with a mix of IKEA furniture and thrift-store finds. His was downright gloomy. Dark painted walls were accessorized with framed Marvel movie prints. A guitar was propped in a corner that she’d never heard him play (she did hear him farting and snoring, though). A futon bed was folded up into the seat position, which she thought was a strange choice of sofa as she’d never known him to have any friends over, let alone overnight guests.

The place smelled of old socks, but she wasn’t getting the sweet telltale aroma of weed, and there were no bongs or joints smoldering in ashtrays anywhere, so she figured he wasn’t high after all. Just naturally dopey.

“Take a seat,” he said.

The only place to sit was the futon. “It’s okay, I’ll stand.”

“Can I get you a drink? Glass of water?”

“I’m good.”

Jeremy stared at her again, and Andi wondered if it was the first time he’d had a woman in his apartment. Then she wondered if anyone would hear her if she screamed and decided probably not, seeing as she was the only neighbor nearby. He blinked and picked up his cell phone from a coffee table.

“I want to show you a video,” he said.

“I hope it’s not R-rated,” she quipped, trying to bring his intensity down a notch.

It didn’t work.

Jeremy blushed all the way to the tips of his ears. “It’s not that kind of video.”

“Relax, Jeremy. I was yanking your chain.”

He nodded. His hands were shaking as he searched through the phone for whatever video he wanted her to see.
