Chapter 43

Monterey Bay Area, CA

Georgia gave Marcus back his shirt, and he met the police outside while she and Andrew put on clothes. Andrew gave her a t-shirt and a pair of sweatpants, which barely stayed on, but it was better than nothing. Certainly better than a ripped evening gown.

By the time she and Andrew got outside, Marcus was at the front of the house talking to a sheriff’s officer. They were examining a first-floor window. The tempered glass was shattered, yet held together in one piece. Georgia thought the window led to the home office.

“We heard the glass break, ran to the safe room, and called 911,” Marcus explained.

The officer stuck out his hand and Andrew shook it. “Mr. Conner, it’s good to see you again,” he said. Andrew introduced Georgia to what turned out to be the sheriff himself, come to check on the town’s highest-profile citizen. “Are you hurt?” The man was staring at the scratch on Andrew’s face.

“No. Everyone’s fine. Thank you.”

“Your security man opened the gate for us.” The man was referring to Marcus, but he was looking at Georgia. She almost corrected him before she realized it was quick thinking on Marcus’ part to play the role of her security guard. “You were lucky he was here tonight.” He directed that point to Andrew.

Andrew agreed. The group walked back to the front porch.

Georgia felt her heart pounding as she waited to see what else Andrew would say. If he told the sheriff what happened, best case they’d be sitting in a station all day and going home on a plane that night.

She followed his gaze to the carport. A deputy passed a light over Andrew’s Porsche, which showed no sign of the near-fatal collision.

“How’s my car?”

The deputy answered, “Looks fine, I don’t see any sign of break in.”

A second officer came around from the far side of the house. He reported no broken windows, no sign of forced entry. “Of course, it’s hard to see in the dark,” he said.

“Mr. Conner, what would you like us to do?”

Conner again looked at Georgia and Marcus. Georgia tried to disguise her desperation as concern.

“It was likely just some kid. The alarm did its job and scared him away. I’m not sure there’s much you can do.”

Georgia felt herself exhale, hoping she didn’t do it too loudly.

The sheriff pointed to a camera set in the corner of the portico. Georgia hadn’t noticed it before.

“I’ll talk to the alarm service. Maybe something showed up on the video,” Andrew said.

“I’m concerned that someone would try to break in with multiple cars here,” the sheriff said. “It might be a good idea for you to get some extra security for the house. Have someone here with you.”

Marcus agreed.

“Tell you what,” the sheriff said. “I can have a guy stay here until the morning.”

“That would be great, sir,” Marcus said. “I know Mr. Conner would really appreciate that.”

Andrew agreed, thanked the sheriff profusely, and promised to stop by the station in the morning to file a report.
