With Johnson situated in a wingback chair near his desk, a single lamp shone on his face, leaving the rest of the room in shadows. Needing to set the proper mood, I brushed the cold steel of my Colt against his face, letting him mull over the precipitous nature of his predicament. “I will gladly put a bullet in your head for killing Jennifer Locke,” I said, my tone offering no hope, “so the only chance you have of living is to cooperate.”

Suddenly gripped by the very real prospect of execution, he started shaking, uncontrollably, his eyes riveted on the barrel of the large-bore gun that was now pressed against his forehead.

“Do we have an agreement?” I asked, backing off and giving him a moment to settle down.

He nodded, turning his gaze toward Rachel. “Who is she?” he asked, his voice almost imperceptible. “Why is she here?”

“For the moment,” Rachel said, sitting in the chair next to him, her Glock pointed at his chest, “all you need to know about me is that, if you shout or even talk too loudly, I’ll put the first bullet in your pecker and the next three in your heart.”

“Please, don’t kill me,” he said, his eyes pleading for leniency, uncertain which one of us would be his executioner. “I swear I didn’t kill Jennifer. You’ve got to believe me.”

Not having expected him to confess straightaway, I lowered myself into the chair opposite him. “The facts say otherwise,” I said, setting the parameters of our discussion, “and once you’ve heard the charges against you, you will be given the opportunity to plead your case.” I paused. “However, as my friend has already told you ... you lie, you die.”

“But I didn’t—“

“I’ve got proof that you embezzled roughly one billion dollars from Celadon Technologies,” I said, talking over him, “all with the intent of framing Jenny for your crimes. Unfortunately for her, she found out what you had done, so you or an accomplice threw her off the Tumwater Canyon Bridge and tried to make it look like a suicide.” I hesitated, studying his eyes and body language. “After that, in an effort to cover up Jenny’s murder, you had your maid killed.”

“No, no,” he cried, vigorously shaking his head, “you’ve got it all—”

“As if all of that isn’t bad enough,” I said, once again cutting him off, “the day I started working here on your estate, someone plowed into my truck, sending it into a ravine, not more than a mile from here.”

“I did no such—”

“And then tonight,” I continued, not yet ready to let him speak, “you tried to kill the two of us by blowing up our car.”

“You also had someone take a shot at Jake,” Rachel said, jumping up out of her chair, pointing her Glock at his crotch and curling her finger around the trigger, “just hours after he was up at the bridge, meeting with the lead investigator into her death.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said, putting on a good act.
