TEN

LANDON

Aubrey’s floor at the Kendrick Enterprises building always smelled like lemon.

The scent was pleasant and subtle. Maybe every floor smelled this way, but as I stepped off the elevator, I breathed in the familiar citrus and grinned.

“Good evening, sir.” The receptionist nodded, not bothering to ask why I was here, as I strode across the lobby.

Not far from her desk, Wilson stood post, his hands clasped in front of him. His face was like stone, no hint of an expression. It was the mask of authority, one I’d assumed myself many times.

I gave him a brief nod, then walked to where Aubrey’s assistant was stationed behind her own desk, her fingers flying over her keyboard as she spoke into her headset.

“She has an opening Thursday at n-nine,” Wynter stuttered, her eyes widening, when I didn’t stop to check in, walking straight for Aubrey’s office.

Aubrey was sitting behind her desk, framed by the dark night and twinkling city lights. Her brown eyes flew up from her screen as I walked through the door, narrowed in a glare until she realized it was me. Then they flared and the corner of her mouth turned up, just slightly, but enough. “Hi.”

“Hey, babe.” I walked around her desk, waiting until she swiveled in her chair to stare up at me. Then I bent and dropped a kiss to her cheek, drawing in her own scent.

Floral perfume with a hint of that lemon, like the building was a part of her. Or maybe she was part of the building.

“Why does it always smell like lemon here?” I asked.

“The floor polish.” Her eyes raked over my plain clothes, the button-down shirt beneath my wool coat. Dark jeans that draped to my boots. Then her gaze locked on my faded black Yankees ballcap. A hint of color crept into her cheeks. “I, um, hi.”

I chuckled, propping on the edge of her desk. “You said that already.”

“I suppose I did.” She tore her eyes away, glancing back to her screen and then to her phone and then back to my hat.

“God, I want to kiss you.”

Her mouth parted. An invitation if I’d ever had one.

I bent, planting my hands on the armrests of her leather executive chair. Holding those chocolate irises hostage, I leaned in so close our noses brushed.

Her breath caught. But instead of taking that pretty mouth and making a mess of her plum lipstick, I walked away, taking a seat on one of her white couches.

“Tease,” she scolded.

“Consider it payback for you punishing me the past two weeks.”

“I’m sorry I didn’t answer your calls.”

“Don’t be.” I waved it off. “You’re busy. Holidays are hectic.”

Yeah, I’d missed her voice, but I was counting on the fact that I’d hear it for years to come. She just had to get used to that idea first.

“Next time, shoot me a text and let me know you’re all right,” I said. “Just so I won’t worry. Deal?”

Aubrey blinked, her head tilting to the side. “You worried?”

“I’m a cop, Aubrey.” I saw the horrors of this world.
