§ 46. Horyuji

From the village of Ikaruga a pathway down a pine-lined avenue leads the visitor toward the oldest wooden structure in the world, built in the seventh century a.d. As he approaches the main gateway to Horyuji (Horyu Temple), he notices a long earthen wall stretching far to the east and west of the entrance.
