§ 46. Horyuji

From the village of Ikaruga a pathway down a pine-lined avenue leads the visitor toward the oldest wooden structure in the world, built in the seventh century a.d. As he approaches the main gateway to Horyuji (Horyu Temple), he notices a long earthen wall stretching far to the east and west of the entrance. Both its weathered contours and its color give one the impression that it must be thousands of years old. Then as the visitor looks through the gateway into the temple courtyard, he sees the real beauty of simplicity in the use of natural materials. From whatever angle one views the structure, whether as a whole or in detail, one has the feeling of viewing works of art. All such works fusing into one work of art—the ultimate in temple structure!
