BELLA

I’d never been more relieved to touch ground and get off an aircraft.

When we landed, I felt transparent after throwing up so much. I hadn’t had a chance to eat or drink anything—everything had come back up.

“How are you feeling?” Trent asked when we climbed into a sleek black car that waited for us at the airfield.

“Better,” I said with a smile. It was only partially true—my stomach still twisted and turned, but not as violently as when we were in the air.

“Good,” Trent said and he took my hand and squeezed it warmly.

I felt a pang of guilt. I wasn’t being totally honest, and I hated it. I just couldn’t tell him the truth. Not yet.

The car drove through the city, then into the mountains. I looked out of the window at the landscape stretching as far as the eye could see. Denver was so different from LA. After we climbed in elevation and drove through a vast forest, we finally came to a large, open area. We passed several small towns and ranches.

I was feeling much better now, and I listened as Trent told me stories of growing up with his siblings. Anya had been the rebellious one, and she’d moved to Colorado years ago to work on a ranch, where she met Kevin. It was a sweet story, and I smiled as Trent talked.

“This is the beginning of his property,” Trent said as we drove along a wooden fence that encompassed Kevin’s ranch.

“It’s huge,” I commented after a while. It felt like we’d been driving along his land forever.

“It’s a pretty big parcel,” Trent said, nodding. “You’d never think Kevin is worth millions from looking at him.”

“He’s very down-to-earth,” I agreed.

“I like him for Anya,” Trent said, nodding. “He’s good for her. She can get so caught up in her head sometimes. She gets anxious and stressed, and I think he mellows her out. It’s just what she needs.”

It was sweet hearing Trent talk about his sister that way. He was so distant from his family, keeping them all at arm’s length, but he really cared. Anyone who spent a bit of time in his company could see that.

Then again, not a lot of people spent time in his company—he didn’t keep only his family at arm’s length, he was distant from everyone.

The car turned through two stone posts and entered the ranch. We wove through pastures where cows grazed and passed a picturesque lake. The main house—a spectacular, enormous wooden lodge—came into view after another set of gates.

It was breathtaking.

We stopped in front of three handsome buildings that were arranged in the shape of a horseshoe, and Joni came out from one to meet us.

“Just in time,” she said with a smile before she hugged me and then Trent. “Everyone arrived just before you, so the party is complete!” She looked at me warmly. “I’m so happy you’re here!”

“Thank you, Joni. This place is amazing,” I said.

Megan came through the door that led to the reception hall and squealed when she saw me.
