The Gnostics believed that the God of the Jews created the world with its evils. To Marcion, the Jewish God was a “worker of evils, delighting in wars, inconsistent in judgment and self-contradictory.” (11) He taught that Jesus came from the Father who was far removed from the Jewish God. Did Paul teach these things about the Jewish God? The answer is a definitive no! However, some passages in Paul’s writings may have been used by later writers to make their Gnostic cases.

In the above passage, Paul considered the God of the Jews as being linked with goodness and with Christ Jesus. (Rom. 4:21-22) In fact, if you were to read Romans, 1 & 2 Corinthians and Galatians, you would be amazed at how many times Paul referred to the God of Jesus being the Jewish God. So how did the Gnostics use Paul as their source of inspiration in this matter? One passage which has been taken out of context is as follows:
