“Liv—what— Where are you going? You need to get some rest—Liv—hey!”

I ignored Con.

Leda moved ahead of us, dreamlike, her silver hair shining like a star, leading us through the maze of darkened corridors, down stairs carpeted with gold, deeper and deeper into the bowels of the ship.

“Liv—hold on—wait!”

I shook my head, dismissing him, and glugged another mouthful of water. One flight of stairs below us, I saw Leda disappearing through a door.

This part of the ship was much fancier than the decks above, despite its lack of windows. The walls were paneled with dark wood, the doors accented with gold. It was all a little odd to me. I’d have thought the posher parts of the ship would be on the higher decks, where it was brighter and they’d have access to balconies and the like.

“Hey—hey—Liv.”

Con pulled me back, his cool hand gently encircling my wrist.

“Look—” he started, but I motioned for him to hush, gesturing up ahead.

Leda had stopped at the end of the corridor, which led to a pair of ornate double doors. We watched as she used a glimmering key card to open them and slip inside. The glimpse I caught of the space beyond revealed a room that was entirely dark. As soon as the door clunked shut, I crept down the corridor.

“Seriously—what are you doing?” hissed Con from behind me.

“What do you think?” I whispered back. “She mentioned something about Raj earlier—I think she knows something—I want to find out what’s going on.”

He fell back against the wood-paneled wall, crossing his arms. “Stalking girls down dark hallways is really not a good look for me.”

I hushed him, quietly placing my ear to the door.

Con caught my eye, his own eyes bright—hovering somewhere between unease and amusement.

Behind the door I could hear low voices—Leda and someone else. Another girl, no doubt Thalia or Lexie. Were they all sharing a cabin? Annoyingly, the heavy wood of the door was too thick for me to make out exactly what they were saying. I gestured for Con to join me and, with a roll of his eyes, he did.

Pressing even further against it, I began to make out the occasional word.

“—has no idea.” A sharp laugh, Leda’s. “—nearly caught us earlier, but it’s nothing I can’t handle.”

Caught us? Doing what? And were they talking about me? Did they mean out there on the deck?

The other person began speaking, their voice too low for me to make out any words, and I watched Con visibly pale before me. The color leeching from his cheeks.

“What?” I hissed. “What is it—what did you hear?”

And then I heard it. Unmistakably. Clear as a bell. The rest of the sentence was unintelligible, but there was no mistaking that word.

Will.

My hand immediately gripped the door handle. Was he in there? I was driving myself mad second-guessing everything. Now was the time to start acting—

Con’s hand closed over mine.

“No,” he said very quietly and very firmly.

I looked up at him. He must have heard it too.
