Ruby 1981
Ruby locked herself in her bathroom and started sobbing. She had witnessed so many fights between her parents and had wanted to be different. And here she was, having the same type of fight. She was mystified by Walter's behavior. It was cheese! He had never cared about their food before. He had always been content to eat the meals she prepared, usually without so much as a thank you. Maybe itâs grief. She thought while looking at herself in the mirror. Possibly losing a brother and finding out about his double life could do this to a person.
She had known and loved Walter long enough to know that this wasn't who he was. He was going through a phase, and she hoped it wouldnât last long, but she would endure his grieving process. This was Walter, her Walter. She thought about how he had been there the night she and her mom left her dad, how he had ridden his bike and walked back home the day she left for Texas; and she thought of the many more equally essential days since then. This was her chance to show enduring love. She nodded at herself in the mirror and went into the kitchen to put the groceries away, but the bags she had left on the counter were gone.
Walter had already put them away. "Walt?" She called. There was no reply. She walked around their small apartment and couldn't find him anywhere. Ruby noticed his walking shoes, a permanent fixture near the front door, were gone. She figured he had taken his afternoon jog earlier than usual. He'll be back, of course, he'll come back. Ruby thought while she opened the fridge. What did she feel like eating? Her eyes rested on the cheese that had caused so much drama. It looked delicious. She reached for the cheese and bumped the container of grapes, sending them all over the kitchen floor. She moved quickly to pick them all up so she could salvage them.
Walter would have something to say if she had to throw all these away. As she moved to pick up the grapes, she noticed the crumpled-up paper. She stopped what she was doing and flattened it out as best she could. It was filled with Walter's scribbled numbers. She had never known him to be interested in math. The numbers and figures didn't make sense to her, but she knew they were significant. She finished picking up the grapes, washed them, and put them back in the fridge.
She started pacing while holding the newly found paper in her hand. What could this be? What did this mean? She racked her mind, trying to come up with some explanation, but nothing made sense to her. These were big numbers, but why was he so upset that he'd crumpled it up? She started pacing, trying to come up with something, anything. Walter's walk seemed to drag on for hours. The moment she heard the door open, she approached him.
