* * *

Joey meets us at the alley right as we finish opening duties. He passes out three breakfast sandwiches with a giant yawn. “Y’all know normal teenagers do this thing called sleeping. You should try it sometime.”

“Hmm.” I unwrap my sandwich. “Never heard of it. Have you heard of it, Ethan?”

He’s already chewing. “Not in the least bit a familiar concept.”

Even though I only scraped together a few hours of sleep last night, I realize I feel more awake now than I have in a long time. The crashing of the pins echoes in my ears, and my fingers itch to play again, to do better than last time.

Joey looks back and forth between the two of us, suspicion in his eyes. “So are you guys, like, friends now? Is that what’s happening here?”

Friends. Yes. That’s what’s going on between Ethan and me. We’re becoming friends. That’s all. I am Ethan’s friend, and Ethan has nice forearms. A normal friend thought.

“Yup.” I nod. “Friends.”

“Gross.” Joey scrunches his nose.

“You’ll survive,” Ethan says, casually slinging an arm around my shoulder. The weight is heavy, and I find myself wanting to lean in closer to its warmth. Why does he smell so good? I’m pretty sure we’re all using the same shampoo at home.

I hold my shoulders rigid as heat crawls across my neck.

Joey eyes us. “O-kay, then.”

Ethan’s arm drops from my shoulder as casually as it went up. He shoots me a quick smile, and I think I manage to smile back normally.

“Prize counter?” Joey asks me.

“Sure,” I agree.

But at that moment, my phone goes off with a text from Pete:

Mini-golf tournament today! Ten staff members required. The following report to the course now…

I forgot that was today, a charity tournament to raise money for the children’s hospital. I scroll through the list, spotting my name first and then Brie’s immediately after. I’m tempted to ask one of the boys to take my place. But I know this tournament is important, and I don’t want to put more stress on Pete’s plate.

“I should go, you guys…,” I say, showing the text.

“Sound good.” Ethan nods. “See you later, Hannah.”

Joey calls out loudly as I walk away, “Save the children!”
