Chapter Eleven

Austin

“Wysteria seems nice,” Evan says, closing his apartment door as I walk up the steps. He zips his jacket, pulls out a pack of cigarettes, flicks the lighter, and ignites one. Since we have elven blood and our lives are naturally extended because of it, he doesn’t believe rules apply. That thinking gets him into trouble all the time. Drugs. Smoking. Drinking. Gambling. To him, the danger is part of living.

I didn’t like that stuff before I became a vampire. Okay, expect occasionally I would have a beer or two. Maybe drink shots and get slightly crazy. Now, though, none of that stuff affects me. My problem now is Wysteria’s blood. She let me drink from her, and it was… life-altering. Even now, as I think about it, my knees get weak. Her blood is like nothing I’ve tasted. Not only that, but it’s made me feel different. Stronger. Faster. My vision is more precise. And it’s not just the physical stuff. I can sense emotion, like with Evan. He’s acting calm and relaxed, but he’s on edge. It’s like Wysteria’s blood took all of my vampire powers and enhanced them one hundred times.

What’s worse, her blood has me craving more. What if I go too far? What if I can’t stop myself? And worst of all? What if someone else finds out about the fact that I can penetrate her skin and drink her blood? Vampires everywhere will come for her.

“She is,” I say, a second later, tucking my hands into my pockets. The air is freezing, the sky clear, and millions of stars shine overhead. Even the Milky Way is visible. I don’t want to talk to him about Wysteria.

Evan inhales and exhales, walks over to the old balcony, where I’m standing, and leans his elbows on the wooden railing. “She seems like a lot of drama too,” he says. “What’s her deal? Have you found out why she was taken to another realm?” His questions are more than curiosity, and I wonder what he’s getting at.

He isn’t going to drop the subject of Wysteria. Maybe I should find out why. “Definitely some drama, but she’s been through a lot. I can handle it.” I avoid answering the question about the other realm. Because I do know, but it’s none of his business.

“And the other stuff?” Evan prods. He never was good at playing cards. Way too easy to read. Now time isn’t any different.

I lean next to him, stealing the cigarette from his hand and taking a drag. Then shrug as I expel the smoke. “No idea.” I take another drag and hand the cigarette back. It’s like ash in my throat. A waste of time, but Evan doesn’t know I’m a vampire, and I need to keep it that way.

“There’s talk around town that she’s something special.” Evan’s eyes narrow, and he searches my face.

Suddenly, I’m on edge. He knows about Wysteria. If he were just my cousin, I wouldn’t care, but after what Christopher told me.
