Bramwell paced his usual path in front of the fireplace, stopping intermittently to poke at the logs with an iron. The fire already burned hot, but he found an odd sense of relief with each jab he thrust into the burning wood that released his pent-up annoyance.
He had spent the entire afternoon in torment about the evening ahead. When he fingered the nightgown that had been Rebeccaâs, it resurrected the past with heated desire. The memory of their lovemaking in the bed upon which he sat with another woman had been arousing, to say the least.
In spite of Miss Woodardâs prickly personality, he surprisingly wrestled with physical attraction. She had combed her dark locks, causing the strands to shine like ebony, and applied rouge and tinted her lips. A heated explosion of lust coursed through his body. It had been far too long since he enjoyed sexual intimacy, and the thought of dominating a feisty woman in bed had engorged him to act upon his urges. He needed no marital vows as a prerequisite for enjoying the pleasures of sexual intercourse. In fact, he did not even need to love a woman for that matter to enjoy a romp. Clearly, he held no affections for Caroline and never would. Bedding her to put her in her place, however, caused a wicked grin to curl the corner of his mouth. He knew the things that he could do to her to make her pliable in his hands. Bloody hell, he wanted nothing more than to rule over her and hear her plead for pleasure
âMaster Croft, dinner is ready,â Pearson announced from behind him.
Bramwell swung around. âIs the dining room set as I requested?â
âYes, sir, just as you asked,â he replied.
He had made an odd requirement for the table setting, but his butler had the sense not to question the reason. âThen I will fetch our dinner guest,â he announced.
Bramwell climbed the staircase, noticing the thumping of his heart against his ribcage. He didnât quite know how he would respond to seeing Miss Woodard wear one of Rebeccaâs dresses. With good sense, he halted before the door, braced himself, and knocked.
âYou may come in.â Bramwell heard her voice tremble in response, revealing her nervous jitters about the evening ahead.
The door opened, and Miss Woodard sat on the edge of the bed. He paused, stunned at the sight of the young woman in Rebeccaâs gown. Rather than reminding him of his former love, she embodied the fabric to such perfection that it astonished him. What he had dreamed of ravishing a few minutes ago nearly drove him mad as he stood there, gawking at the vision. Why hadnât he seen her innate beauty before now? It puzzled him.
âHere, give me your hands and let me help you stand. I wish to look at you,â Bramwell said, approaching and reaching out. Caroline obeyed and placed her cold hands on his palms. As he pulled her upright, her plump breasts spilled over the top of her bodice.
