About 400 workers turned out for this photograph, taken around 1894. The work was often dangerous; injuries were frequent, and three men were killed in an 1892 building collapse. Some labor disputes occurred, and the plant was closed during most winters because the buildings were unheated. Only toward the end of the 1890s did Edison authorize the construction of housing.

A man stands in the flywheel of the generator of the powerhouse, giving a sense of the size of the machinery that could be found throughout the plant.
