Walking away from Todd was pure misery. Anyone else might've been dealing with resentment as well, but he'd moved beyond that more years ago than he could remember.

Leaving his shoes at the front door, Daniel grabbed a bottle of water, then found himself back at the door, listening carefully. The hallway was silent. Not that Todd had been making all that much noise before, but he felt fairly certain he could get out without being noticed.

Breaking into an easy jog, bare feet silent on the road, he'd traded asphalt for sand in ten minutes. Moonlight stretched across the beach in a wide swath that felt cool on his shoulders, soothing the rippling skin there. Sighing deeply, he stood on the edge of the water, letting the waves wash across his feet. There had been so many people on the beach today, each one exerting their own stress, however unintentionally, on his bond.

Eyes closed, he reached out, gently pulling and twining the thin strings of power assigned to him—

The jolt of otherness broke his concentration, scattering the strings to the wind.

"Dune Walker."

Shoving down annoyance, Daniel turned around. "Ah, the Gifter. I didn't know you were still in town."

"Your friend Todd is a pretty talented barista," the Gifter said. "He picks up other things, too." This time the smile sat slyly on his face. "He told me about this spot, but he doesn't know why it's special, does he?"

Daniel shrugged, refusing to rise to the bait.

The roll of laughter was quiet, inviting him to join in. "I'm not interested in him, you know. He just seemed like a nice guy. Friendly, kind. Deserving."

"So you left him a gift?" Daniel said, voice tight. It wasn't really a question, for all that he phrased it as such.

It was the Gifter's turn to shrug, the movement loose and easy. "It's what I do. But I'm surprised he didn't tell you about it."

There. After confirmation, he was allowed to ask. Not that he hadn't known already. Todd had been acting too strange afterwards for there not to have been something going on. "What did you leave him?"

Instead of answering, he grinned, kneeling down in the damp sand. Slowly, carefully, with one finger he traced two hearts entwined, and wrote underneath them '"love at first sight'".

"Seriously? Fuck you, dude, who said we needed your help here?" Daniel groaned, running a hand through his hair. Out of all the stupid interfering damned things that could've been done …

"I'm
