The next morning, Emmie sulked through breakfast, threw her shoe at Max and then, at the school gates, burst into tears.

‘You said I’d wake up and know what to do!’ she sobbed.

‘I thought you would!’ said Kate, feeling wretched. ‘It doesn’t always work.’ She glanced at her watch. ‘I have to go and meet Dan now about my website. Please, promise me you won’t quit the play just yet. One more sleep and I think we’ll have a solution.’

She forced a sobbing Emmie through the gates and sprinted to the caffe. She could see Dan through the glass frontage, two coffees and a laptop in front of him, as well as a pad and pen.

‘Dan, hi!’ Kate said, sitting down. She started unwinding her scarf and peeling off her coat. ‘Thank you so much for doing this.’

‘It’s no bother,’ he said, sitting up a little straighter. ‘It just took me a few hours.’ He grinned. ‘It can be daunting, when you don’t know what you’re doing.’

‘Which, let me guess, most creative types don’t?’

‘Let’s say it’s not always their strength.’ He nudged one of the coffees towards her. ‘Black, hot milk on the side, right?’

‘Thanks,’ she said, taking a grateful sip.

‘It’s what you always order, my nerd brain remembered.’ He turned the laptop towards her. ‘This is what I was thinking for your home page. Really simple navigation. It’s not very whizzy but usability is key here. Tell me anything you don’t like, I can sort it.’

‘This looks fantastic,’ Kate said, her eyes widening as he clicked through. ‘Did you really just spend a few hours on this?’

‘If you know your stuff it doesn’t take long,’ he said. He let out a huge yawn. ‘Sorry. Lois had a big deadline and Livvie had earache, so I spent the whole night sleeping on her bedroom floor. I found a Barbie under my back this morning.’

‘I should have been the one buying you coffee,’ said Kate sympathetically. Dan was so lovely, she thought. A good husband and father. Adam, for all his strengths, had never spent the night with the kids when they were sick. His job had always come first. It had always been her mopping foreheads and holding sick bowls.

‘You can get me one after the first big client hit via your shiny new website. Deal?’

‘Deal,’ she said, scanning the page. ‘Honestly, this looks amazing. I can’t thank you enough.’

Dan cleared his throat. ‘I’d be happy to meet again to talk through your copy if you’d like. I think we could optimise your SEO.’

There was a soft knocking on the glass window and Kate looked up to see Alice, looking like a doll in a camel coat and woolly hat, her cheeks pink with cold. Mark was at her side, dour-faced and hugely out of place in his flat cap, Barbour and cords.

‘Come in!’ mouthed Kate, beckoning, and Alice hurried through the door. Mark followed, his expression resigned. He probably thought caffes were a city-dwelling waste of time.

‘What are you doing in town?’ asked Kate, standing and hugging her sister.
