“I’m going to a party. With Jason!” Cele whirled once around the tiny space, bumping into the potter’s wheel. She stopped and evaluated the bust. From nothing but dead clay, Celestina Morgan did this.

The bust was of Dave, the ugly giant. It accurately recorded his uneven face but also what was inside. Kindness and humanity showed through every stroke. The piece was glorious and powerful.

A knock broke into her thoughts and Cele opened the door.

“Hey, Samuel, how are you?” She smiled.

“Why so happy? Hey, Aidan.”

Aidan pulled up his head and stretched.

“Jason bought me this.” She beamed showing the diamond bracelet in the sun beams. “And we’re going to an event Friday. I’m getting my nails done and a new haircut.” Cele fluffed her hair out and made a funny face at him.

“And getting back with Jason is a good thing?” Sam kept his eyes on the floor and played with the puppy.

“Of course, I love him. Every couple has their issues,” she said although Jason was her first serious boyfriend. Mother and Russ were wrong.

“And he loves you back? Happily-ever-after?”

“Definitely. What’s wrong? As a chaplain, you should be in favor of marriage.”

“Part of the job is to dispense good advice. Want some?”

“Not unless it’s go forth and get married, woman.” Cele faltered. “You don’t recommend getting married? Unbelievable. I’ve only waited my whole life for the fairy tale ending. And the chaplain isn’t onboard?”

Sam held up his hands in surrender.

“Should it even matter that a man who rode with me to the ER and, and, brings soup occasionally, does not sanction my matrimony? No, not at all.” Cele stalked across the small space.

Sam stood up, smiling, still shaking his head. “Sorry, would you like to pray about it together?”

“No, my prayers were answered. Jason came back. Besides, I gave up praying when my mom asked God to help her and my dad died. Where was He when I needed Him?”

“Where He always is, Cele, waiting for you.” Sam stood up and walked to the door.

“Well, I’ll send him an invitation to the wedding.” Cele slammed the door on the man.

Tears started and Cele couldn’t understand why. Was God there for her? How could He be, after she ignored Him and cursed Him when Dad died?

God always forgave. Sunday school taught it, but was it a tale told to children?

Cele fell to her knees. “Dear God, forgive me for shutting You out of my life since my Dad died. His death wasn’t Your fault and that You want all your children to live forever together in heaven. Please forgive me and open my heart to You.” She prayed as she learned in church, “Our Father, Who art in Heaven...”

Cele slept well that night and awoke refreshed. She was up and cleaning the apartment when a discrete knock interrupted. Dave was there to take Aidan for his walk.

“Dave, how are you? We can take Aidan down together.”

Dave put on the harness after corralling the tiny pup.

“Do you know about the peace that passes understanding? I prayed last night.
