Chapter 34

Jamal

‘You look fine,’ Ammi says, as she moves to fix my tie and I step away from her.

‘So stop fussing.’

‘I’m not fussing. Just making sure it’s straight. Anyway, you look perfect.’

I don’t know how much of that is true. The three of us are the only people who have turned up at Munafiq Mamu’s home for the Nikah. Ammi didn’t want to invite anyone else for this occasion. Arham, of course, didn’t show up because he couldn’t just drop everything and come away because I’m getting married. And then, there’s Munafiq Mamu’s family who will be here as well.

Sadia Mami is quite stunned by the turn of events. For some reason best known to her, Ammi didn’t tell her about the change of plans. That means even Nadeem didn’t know and it makes me glad. In fact, Nadeem isn’t even at home today. I’m wondering if it’s some sort of mind games between Ammi and Sadia Mami but I can’t bring myself to care because in another hour or so, I will be married.

It’s surreal. Unbelievable.

‘But how can this even happen? This is not how a wedding takes place!’ Sadia Mami is complaining to Ammi. It’s not like she’s being inconvenienced by a sudden avalanche of visitors or anything.

‘It’s okay Sadia. These things happen,’ Ammi tells her with a wide, genuine smile but it really feels like Ammi’s gloating inwardly. When Sadia Mami gets up to change out of her already shiny, silky clothes into something more wedding-appropriate, Ammi notices Hameeda Bi standing at the entrance of the living room where we’re waiting for Aliya and her family to come, looking wide-eyed.

Getting up, Ammi hands her a few notes and pats her arm. ‘For all the trouble we’re putting you in, by coming here constantly.’

Hameeda Bi’s eyes fill up with tears but she shakes her head. ‘He is like my son only,’ she sniffles. I feel the warmth of her love fill me and I get up and embrace her, resting my chin on top of her head. ‘I’m so happy today,’ she says.

I’ve tried to get Hameeda Bi to come and live with us, but her loyalty towards Munafiq Mamu is very strong and she won’t budge.

Hameeda Bi leaves after a few moments, wiping her eyes with the corner of her dupatta. She looks overwhelmed. Sadia Mami appears after a little while, wearing a blinding orange outfit and she smiles vacuously at us. Munafiq Mamu follows her, looking somewhat subdued and chastened. Mamu knew about the wedding, and I don’t know why he didn’t inform his wife. Again, some sort of power play move by my mother which I’m not interested in knowing. Obviously, he must have gotten an earful from his wife for keeping it from her.

I honestly couldn’t care about these politics. I don’t want these intrigues and mind games. I just want...

Aliya.

I get to my feet when I see that she’s at the door. I didn’t even hear the doorbell ring. I didn’t even see anyone go to open the door.
