Hachimaki are valued by all kendoists as mementos of the matches or contests in which they have participated. The hachimaki is usually given as a gift from a dojo to a visiting kendoist who uses its facilities for a practice session.

The next piece of kendo armor that the kendoist becomes familiar with is the men or face mask. Made of heavy cotton material with a heavy steel face protector, the men gives the head and face ample protection against any blow or thrust. The proper way to place the men on the head is first to open the wings back wide, spreading them apart so they will not push the hachimaki off the head. The lower front inside of the mask has a chin-rest piece that should be in line with the bottom of the chin. The men is then pushed on and back so that the top forehead and the chin fit securely on the forehead piece and the chin rest, the hachimaki acting as a buffer between the surface of the forehead and the protective pad in the men (Figs. 24-25).

Once the men is firmly secured on the head, the himo are drawn tightly from the top around the head and back through the mask. Generally the himo are wrapped around the men twice and drawn tight to make sure that each cord is above the ears. The knot is tied securely, and the cords are drawn out to equal length. The kendoist should make sure that the himo and the knot are resting on the hachimaki so as to prevent irritating the skin. As a rule, the base attachment of the himo to the men should be in line with the mouth or about four bars upward on the men (Fig. 24).
