Chapter 19
Liz was reviewing the next dayâs cases with Cherie when her phone began to vibrate. Liz picked it up and saw Lucyâs ring photo with her trademark red hair and incandescent smile.
âWould you excuse me, Cherie? I need to take this.â
âI think weâre done here,â Cherie said, inserting her stylus into her tablet case. âIâll come back later if I have any questions.â She went out and closed the door behind her.
Liz smiled as she swiped across the phone screen. âLucy! Whatâs up?â
âI hope Iâm not interrupting anything important.â
âI was meeting with Cherie, but we were winding down.â
âAre you sure?â
âLucy, you are the only person besides Maggie and my mother whose call Iâll always take. Whatâs going on?â
âI wanted to give you advance warning. Maggie knows what happened on the boat.â
Incredulous, Liz got up and stood at the window. âYou told her? Why?â
âBecause she asked.â
Liz closed her eyes and thought of Maggieâs face, that anxious expression she sometimes had when she thought no one was looking. She tried to be so brave about the cancer, so patient when Liz was late at work, or a family gathering was interrupted. She smiled when Lucy and Liz flirted, but she wasnât amused. She was frightened.
âHow much did you tell her?â Liz asked.
âThe facts. I told her you kissed me. I responded, then broke it off.â
Liz whistled through her teeth. âShit!â
âExactly. But I wanted you to know before you got home.â
âThank you for the heads up.â Liz pulled her duffle bag out of the closet. âWhat did she say when you told her?â
âAt least one of us has integrity.â
âOuch.â
âIâm sorry, Liz. Sheâs my best friend. I couldnât lie to her.â
âNo, I get it. Thanks, Lucy. You did the right thing. I appreciate the call,â said Liz, heading down to the shower.
âI love you, Liz. Good luck.â
âI love you too, Lucy,â said Liz, turning on the shower. âDonât worry. Iâll handle it.â She ended the call and threw her phone into her duffle bag on top of her clothes. She pulled the scrubs top over her head and wiggled out of her shorts and underwear. She still preferred to shower in the morning, but since the pandemic had started, sheâd switched to showering after work to prevent carrying the virus home on her clothes or hair.
From her days as a surgeon, Liz was used to taking quick showers. She could be done, including a hair wash, in less than two minutes. Being a Virgo, sheâd even timed it. She was equally quick at dressing. A quick blow-dry, and she was ready to walk out the door. She unlocked the cabinet where she kept her gun purse and headed down the hall. Cherie was doing paperwork in the staff lounge.
âYou okay for tomorrow morning?â Liz called from the doorway.
Cherie nodded. âYes, I think I have it under control.â
âCall me if you need me.â
Cherie raised a thumb. âYes, boss!â
As Liz started the engine of her truck, she wondered whether she should go directly home. She knew that one way or the other she was heading into a firestorm.
