Learn to Speak Effectively about Your Book

Learning to speak effectively about your book is one of the most important tips I can share with you. It's also an area that most authors need to improve considerably.

Authors spend so much time writing their book that when asked to explain it, they often begin with a pause, followed by “ummmm . . .” That's not good, because from a marketing perspective you are by far the best spokesperson (and salesperson) for your book. You need to be able to effectively communicate your ideas and story line verbally. Potential readers get excited at the prospect of listening to an author speak, and doing so effectively can hook your listener, and hopefully entice them to buy and read your book!

Specifically, I recommend you prepare to be able to talk about your book in three different situations:

A one-minute blurb. This is your elevator pitch (so named in the industry because you should be able to present it in the short time it takes to ride an elevator from one floor to the next). This sixty-second pitch answers the following questions: What is the title? What is the main idea or story line of your book? And what will readers get out of it? Why are you qualified to write this book? If you completed the exercises in Tips #8 and #9, this should be very easy.

A five- to ten-minute overview. For nonfiction, in addition to the points in the one-minute blurb, what are the pillars that support your main idea? For fiction, give us a more in-depth look at your plot and characters. In either case, provide your listener with specific, compelling examples, and perhaps one anecdote about what makes your book unique.

A one-hour presentation. This format is suitable for a radio interview or group presentation and includes all of the above but with more detail. For nonfiction, be sure to organize your ideas clearly, and support them with anecdotes whenever possible. For fiction, you will really need to address some of the themes of your book in addition to providing an enticing look into the plot and main characters.
