Data from http://scrippsco2.ucsd.edu/data/atmospheric_co2/mlo.

The amount of time over which data is averaged is called the “averaging window.” To isolate the long-term variability present in the atmospheric CO2 data, the annual variability needs to be removed. Averaging over a 12-month window will remove variability that occurs on a timescale less than 12 months, but it will not remove variability with a time scale more than 12 months. If you were using a different data set, for example one that had a strong El Niño / Southern Oscillation (ENSO) signal (cycle of three to five years), then you would have to average over a window of five years or more to remove the ENSO signal from the data. The averaging window should match the timescale of the variability that needs to be removed.

When calculating an average, what x-axis value should I pair with the new y-axis value?
