Ana

I couldn’t think with his arms wrapped around my waist and his lips whispering sweet threats into my ear. I’d planned to forget everything he and I had settled on days ago and say a big fuck you to ever willingly being with him again. But the way he made my heart skip a beat and my skin flush with heat . . . I worried I wasn’t strong enough to fight him.

To fight my husband.

“I have never looked at something more holy than you with that golden crown on your head. My eyes have yet to witness a divine sight as my wife wrapped in white silk, shaking in our kitchen as I prepare to bring her sweet release.”

I audibly moaned, my thighs clenching together as his strong hands squeezed my ass, and he chuckled. “Do you want release, Circe? Do you want to come on my fingers right here in our kitchen?”

Is that what I wanted?

His fingers moved around me, digging hard into my ass before lifting me off the ground and setting me on the cold granite counter. He was nestled between my open legs, now eye level with me. Leo’s eyes still held a bright fire, but he seemed more serious as he took a breath.

“I don’t want to keep things from you, Lisichka, but there are some parts of my empire that I’d rather leave outside of our marriage.”

My arms were resting on his chest still, and a feeling of warmth settled below my touch. “I don’t like being lied to, Leo.”

I didn’t want to be left in the dark, knowing that the shadows were where the beast with the sharpest teeth hid away. He tried to keep me shielded from those things, but there was no such thing as safety in a city run by the Solkovs.

He shook his head. “I’m not going to lie, but I might not share everything with you. I told you I was out of town for business, and it’s true. But, you don’t need to know what that business was.”

My brow raised. “So it had something to do with D.C?”

“Don’t ask me about my business, Lisichka.”

My jaw tightened, hands balling into fists against his tuxedo. “The moment you put that ring on my finger, it became our business. Husband,” I added for good measure.

He wanted to use my name and my dead family as a way to grow his empire, but I wouldn’t roll over like a dog. If he really thought I would turn my head into the satin sheets and close my eyes, he was wrong. Lev had told me not to let his brother bring me down into the darkness with him, but what if it was the only way to come out alive?

Leo placed both hands on the counter and straightened his back, looking down at me again with dark, discerning eyes. His brows rose for a moment before he chuckled. “I thought you’d prefer to stay locked away in the library for the rest of your life, but instead, you wish to dive into the pit of rats and vultures?”

I huffed.
