Chapter 25

Cory

Since Gemma and I were confined in this room together, with nothing else to do, I began working on the locks. I sometimes chose random number combinations, basically just whatever popped into my head. Other times, I chose important dates like birthdays, holidays, basically anything of significance I could think of.

My heart raced each time I pulled on the door of a safe to see if it had unlocked. But I was always met with disappointment. The doors were shut tight.

My back was starting to ache from being hunched over and my fingers were cramping from spinning the number dial, but I didn’t stop. I couldn’t.

Strangely, what had once been my biggest fear was now my only source of hope. There had to be some drinkable water in one of these safes, or maybe some food, or possibly something that would help us escape. I had to make it out of here alive and get back to Tasha.

Gemma had long since given up banging on the door and trying to break it down. She called for Wade and Charlotte, but they never came. She also tried to help me open up the safes but was unsuccessful.

Her frustration and anger continued to escalate. I had to listen to her constant complaining, which was starting to feel like torture. Why couldn’t she go back to singing Disney songs?

“What’s the use in opening another safe?” she asked, pacing the room. “It’s just gonna be full of stuff we can’t eat and drink. Bellany just wants to torment us. She wants to play games and make us suffer.”

“There isn’t anything else for me to do. I might as well try.”

“There is something else you can do.”

I gestured to the door. “I already tried to break it down. You saw how hard I tried. It won’t budge.”

Gemma shook her head. “I’m not talking about the door.”

“Okay, then what?” I scanned the room, unsure what she was referring to. There was no way out. There were no windows. The air vents were too small to climb through. We were trapped.

“You could come and sit by me.” She patted the floor next to her.

“I’m right here. I’m in the same room as you,” I replied, shooting her a questioning look. “Why do I need to sit over there?”

Her bottom lip was jutting out. She looked like she was about to cry. Again. And honestly, I didn’t think I could handle it. Hearing her cry was worse than listening to her complain.

I abandoned the safe I had been working on and sat next to her. The floor was uncomfortable, but my back felt better leaning against the wall. I opened and closed my fists a few times, stretching my aching fingers.

Gemma laced her arm around mine and rested her head on my shoulder. “Cory, I’m scared.”

“I am too,” I admitted. “I don’t know how much longer we’re going to be stuck here. But I’m not gonna give up hope.”

She nuzzled in a little closer, melting against me.

My gaze shifted to the two bottles of water sitting on the floor, both unopened.
