Chapter 25

“All packs and bags are to be given to Delric,” Hazen whispered to the group. “Carry only your weapons. Delric will stay behind in case we need an emergency extraction.”

They were all crouched behind a small hill leading to the village. They’d been walking all day until they had finally stumbled upon the group of buildings. A thick layer of trees from the mountain forest blocked them from sight, but it was barely enough to keep Jemros hidden. The village beyond had cut down the trees around their buildings. Anyone who approached had no where to hide.

We should wait until darkness falls, Jemros thought to Delric. No one would see me scouting around the village.

Hazen doesn’t want to be here when night falls, Delric reminded him. It’s a quick look to see if there’s a way in. That’s all.

Jemros turned his head to look at the man sitting on his back. If you think they’ll be so quick than why are you sulking at being left behind.

“Nil and Kepa, head to the north. Rayna and Ara, you’re with me. See if we can get through the first row of buildings. If so, take a few minutes, scout it out, then meet back here.”

They all nodded.

“Good luck,” Delric whispered to them.

He watched as they split into two groups and disappeared over the hill. He and Jemros were silent as they waited. There was no crackling of branches or singing of birds. The sun was growing lower on the horizon, burning the colors in the sky to a deep red.

Should we train while we wait? Jemros asked.

That’s probably not a good idea. I want to be alert in case they need us.

Despite his words, Delric felt his mind drifting into the dragon’s. Jemros was unadulteratedly open to him, allowing Delric to slip into his thoughts and senses without effort and see what he saw. The black beast had been clear that he didn’t want their training shared with the others, and Delric hadn’t pushed him for a reason.

He’d learned not only that a dragon’s senses were sharper than his own, but they felt the world around them differently as well. Magical orbs of light flew by sparsely, but Jemros felt each one. It was as if they whispered, wondering what sort of creature he was. The magic knew he was not of Loraillvon.

The passing of time felt differently as well. As Delric settled in to wait for the others, he paid careful attention to that part of the dragon’s mind. What felt like an hour to him was corrected by Jemros’ own awareness. They hadn’t been gone long. No need to worry, yet.

It took us longer to find the village than we thought, Delric said with his mind. We’ll need to find more provisions on the way back.

The journey back will go more quickly, now that we can mark the falls on your parchments. It only took us so long because we did not know our bearings, Jemros assured him.

Nothing seems wrong with this village.
