LAST ONE ON, FIRST ONE OFF
Since I am the last one to get on the bus in the morning, I am the first one to get off in the afternoon.
âAlyssa, I will see you tomorrow. Please call if you want to get together to work on our papers,â says Onika as I stand to leave.
âOK, I sure will,â I reply as I exit the bus.
I wait until the bus pulls further up the road before I cross to the apartments. I am so busy looking for oncoming cars, I donât realize Marcus is peering out the back window. He sees me entering the apartment building.
When I get inside, I immediately lock the door behind me. âMommy, are you here?â I call out. Not hearing a response, I unpack my bookbag and begin my homework. By the time she arrives, I am almost finished. She looks extra tired today, so I volunteer to make dinner.
I look inside the fridge and find some bologna, a cheese slice, and a few pieces of bread. I make us sandwiches, and we pretend we are on a picnic at the zoo. We pull the tattered blanket off the bed and put it onto the floor. As we sit and eat, we talk about all the make-believe animals we pretend to see walking around in the grass. I love spending time with my mom; she is such a fantastic person.
Afterward, we put the blanket back onto the bed, then I shower. The picnic may be imaginary, but thank goodness the shower is real. While brushing my hair, I tell Mom about Mrs. Bush and the letters she asked us to write. I mention that I want to write one because I know what it is like to be homeless, and I understand their fears firsthand. Mom agrees it would be a beautiful thing to do and says that should I decide to write one, she will review it for me.
