Chapter Thirty

True to his word, the possum led them straight and sure to the eastern fringes of the Blackwing forest, where the tentative warble of thrushes and wrens hinted at dawn. Throughout the night they hadn’t dared utter a word as they navigated the dark forest, but having left the nightmarish trees behind them they all grinned with relief.

“Well this here’s where I say goodbye.” Pachua touched his forehead. “You’d best be hurrying along. The Urzoks have been lurkin’ in these parts, a right mean mob. I’d bet my last apple they’re looking for you lot. And no doubt the Blackwings have already found their comrades in the dungeon there.”

He then saluted each of them in turn, until he came to the princess. He took her paw and made a gallant bow over it. “And may I say, ’twas an honor to rescue a brave and beautiful princess such as yourself.”

Theo’s ears flicked in indignation. He was the one who’d had to persuade the possum to help her, and here the rogue was claiming all the credit! Theo noticed darkly that she seemed flattered.

“Might I ask the princess’s name?”

“Indigo of Alvareth. A pleasure to meet you, Sir Pachua.”

Brune whistled, scratching his head with one broad paw. “Doesn’t time pass like a winter’s sleep! I remember when you were in swaddling clothes, Bobo—”

“Please don’t call me that,” Indigo interrupted, bristling. “I’ve been crown princess for some time, Brune.”

“This is Manneki,” Theo chimed in, pointing at the little monkey who was examining his singed tail. “And my name is Theo.”

“Like you, Theo here will help defend Ralgayan before going to Mount Mahkah to be an apprentice,” Brune explained. “And Manneki … that’s a long story.”

Indigo looked Theo up and down with mild interest. She double knotted her sword’s hilt to her belt, then said, “The possum is right. The sooner we leave this accursed forest the safer we’ll be.”
