Connor knew he was staring, but he couldn’t get over the way Rina looked. All that beautiful hair—gone. It would take some getting used to. Of course she was still Rina. Still beautiful. But now she looked more delicate.

During dinner he’d been staring, but that was partly because they were sitting opposite each other and it would have been rude and awkward if he’d avoided looking at her. Now, after their meal, they’d decided to take a walk in the grounds of the hotel and, despite a Herculean effort on his part, he still wasn’t able to keep his eyes off her.

‘I’m still me, Connor,’ she said, unconsciously echoing his thoughts.

‘You, but different.’

‘A new me, then.’

‘What made you decide to have it cut? I know you’re impulsive, but I have to admit I am a little shocked.’

‘It wasn’t really impulsive. My hair has been weighing me down for a while.’ She paused, and with a giggle added, ‘Physically and metaphorically. It was time to do something about it.’

‘When was the last time you cut your hair?’

‘I’ve never really had it cut before, just trimmed the ends to keep them tidy.’

‘That’s a drastic change, then.’

‘Hmm, I’m not sure about drastic. I think the correct word is necessary.’

She sounded happy, and free, as if the loss of her hair really had lightened her. He hoped she wouldn’t regret it and become upset later.

‘Don’t worry, I’m not going to lie awake crying about how I’ve lost my beautiful hair.’

How was she reading his mind?

‘Was it really that much of a nuisance?’ he asked.

‘When you’re trying to stand but your head gets wrenched back because you’ve accidentally sat on your own hair, even once, is one time too many.’

He couldn’t help laughing at the image her rueful confession conjured.

‘How do you think your aunt’s going to react?’ he asked.

‘Surprised, I guess.’

She sounded blasé, but he already knew how much she loved her aunt and cared about her opinion.

‘It’s going to be strange for you now, working on hair products. You were a walking advert for Essence before.’

Rina gave him a cheeky smirk. ‘Everybody who uses Essence is a walking advert for it.’

He inclined his head, captivated by her easy wit.

‘Anyway,’ she continued, ‘Essence works on short hair just as well as long—as you should know.’

He inhaled sharply when she touched his own wavy strands.

‘How did you know I use Essence?’ he asked.

‘I can always tell. Like I said, it shows.’

‘Ah, so you judge people on their hair?’

Her laughter trilled out. ‘No, only people from companies that want to buy Essence. It’s an easy way to weed only those who are only interested in the money they can make from the product but don’t care about Essence itself, or the ethos of Lachance.’

It was the perfect segue into a conversation about business, but Connor was reluctant to follow that path. In fact, he was finding that Rina was distracting him from business. He had spent most of the day accompanying her while she toured the company’s facilities, which had been completely unnecessary.
