CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

NUNA

“It is actually incredibly difficult to use Chaos without a vessel to channel the energy. Very few people are able to harness raw energy from empty space. Most with Potential need to use Crystals - small gems that house a limited amount of Chaos. Crystals are expendable. They give a user a finite source of Chaos.”

Abigail ordered a Coke and a piece of lemon cake, then sat back and opened her laptop.

Wearing a ‘York University’ baseball cap, a baggy hooded sweatshirt and loose-fitting jeans, she was hiding out in a diner on the outskirts of New Washington. She had slowly followed Jupiter’s movements for the past few days, following him from a few miles behind, driving through the winding streets of NUNA keeping hot on his tail.

From her surveillance, she discovered that her whole family: Luke, Zoey and Jonathan, had all been in the Capital recently. She assumed it had been their package that Jupiter was after. They had been seen at the White City, meeting with Agatha Holcomb and Meredith Belles. Abbie was a big fan of Meredith; she displayed all the qualities of leadership that she wished her Father had and wasn’t afraid of upsetting people. She was one of the few Council members she didn’t dislike or distrust. Hopefully, she would have a chance to see her on this trip to Washington… although she had little inkling as to what her trip would actually involve.

She knew that Jupiter was after a package - that much was certain. She knew this from following text conversations, email trails and tapping phone calls between Jupiter and his contacts. The conversation she had listened to in the hotel room had sparked her into action, realising that the package was arriving imminently. She had taken it upon herself to stop Jupiter from obtaining this fabled package.

The recent phone call had also presented Abigail with a new dilemma to reflect on. Jupiter was supposedly being helped by XIV… an infamous member of The 33. A man who was, as far as Abbie was aware, locked in the Chaos Prison to rot for eternity. No one escaped that place. So how could he be involved?

Briefly, she had also pondered on who Jupiter’s contact had been that day in New Vegas. Who had been on the other end of the phone? It had been difficult to pick up any accent, and they had spoken fluent English. She had replayed the phone conversation many times, running it through voice recognition software and CDU databases. Nothing. Her suspicions centred around this being the voice of The Viper, or the even more elusive Vesarovic, whoever he was. In Abbie’s mind, it was Vesarovic that was pulling all the strings. He was the mastermind behind The 33. Just who the hell was he? And where the hell was he?

So many unanswered questions… and she was desperate for some answers, some clarity.

Her cake and drink arrived. She thanked the waitress, tipping her generously (always good form to tip well, her Father had taught her that), and turned to her laptop.
