Chapter 30

When they got off the train, they asked the ticket agent where to find a hotel for the night. They were directed to a hotel in the center of town.

As they left the station, Keith whispered to Nicholas that someone was watching them.

“He’s in the corner,” said Keith. “He’s holding a newspaper, but it just makes him stand out.”

Alice heard what he said and added quietly, “I saw him, too, and was going to tell you. He looks like someone from a cheap spy movie.”

“Could he be one of the people who were chasing you?” Keith asked Nicholas.

“Impossible. I don’t see how. But I’ll keep an eye on him. You’re both right. He looks suspicious. Maybe he’s just a crook looking for his next mark.”

They never made it to the hotel.

They had just dropped the letter to Ruth and Bill in the mailbox in front of the post office when Alice cried out. Something went through the sleeve of her jacket and put a hole in the mailbox.

“What was that?” cried Keith. “Are you okay, Alice?”

“I’m fine. It went through my jacket. It didn’t hit me.”

“No time for that,” said Nicholas. “Move, move, move!”

He pushed them out of the way just as another hole appeared in the mailbox. This time, they all heard a popping noise before the hole appeared.

They took cover behind a parked car, and Nicholas pulled out his gun. Three holes appeared in succession in the front seat of the car.

“No time for the silencer,” said Nicholas, who took aim at a target across the street and took two shots. The noise from the .45 put an end to the quiet of the evening. Pedestrians screamed and took cover.

Two more pops sounded from across the street, and one of the tires of the car they hid behind exploded.

“We have to get out of here,” said Keith. “I see some cops coming.”

Nicholas aimed and shot three times. The first shot destroyed the shooter’s weapon and his hand. The second shot got the man in the throat. As he was falling, Nicholas’s third shot put a hole in his forehead.

“Let’s go,” shouted Keith.

Nicholas hesitated. It looked to Keith like he was considering going across the street to check out the shooter.

“Nicholas, he’s dead. Let’s go.”

Still, Nicholas hesitated. Finally, with the police less than a block away, he shook his head and said quietly, “Okay, you’re right. Let’s go.”

They ran up the street in the general direction of the portal. People stepped out of their way. One man foolishly tried to stop them, but Nicholas smashed him in the face with his gun. The man screamed in pain.

“Stupid,” muttered Nicholas.

“What were you doing back there?” asked Keith as they ran. “It looked like you wanted to go over to the shooter.”

“I did. I wanted a better look at him.”

“I thought you said no one else was coming after you.”

“Obviously, I was wrong.”

Keith let it go. Nicholas was angry. The more questions Keith asked, the angrier Nicholas was going to become.
