Mainly what it is, is that I’m tired of being afraid to feel bad. Kelly asked me to think about why I did homework and worked so hard in the first place, and when I told her it was because the homework was mandatory—that was the point—she shook her head and told me to think deeper. Not everyone does things simply because they’re told to, she said. So why do you?

I found the question startling and think about it constantly. In the morning, brushing my teeth: Why am I doing this? Because I’ll feel bad all day if I don’t. Well, that, and morning breath is disgusting.
