Hannah loved being alone on the site.

And today she needed it more than ever.

She’d let the crew go at six because they’d all been putting in a lot of overtime and she didn’t want to wear them out when they still had so far to go. But as for her, having this time to herself, in the quiet, gave her a chance to unwind at her own pace. And since the kitchen was at the back of the restaurant, far from the street, it was as if she were alone in the world. Considering the day she’d had so far, alone was a very good thing.

She stood back to check out the work done so far. Under the glare of the bare, overhead lightbulbs, the kitchen looked like less of a disaster area and more like a work in progress. Without the crew there, she could concentrate on a few of the touches she thought would give the kitchen just a little extra oomph.

Hannah smiled to herself as she spread wood glue on a pine slat, then crouched to apply it to the end of a new cabinet. The slats were decorative, and when the cabinets were painted, the extra pieces would look as if they’d been carved into the cabinets themselves.

When she had the last slat in place, she reached down for the right-angle wood clamp. She had to clamp the wood overnight to give the glue a chance to set up.

Smiling to herself, Hannah kept her left hand on the slat and swept out to reach the clamp. And couldn’t. “Damn it.”

“What’s wrong?’

She jolted and just managed to swallow a shout of surprise. Looking back over her shoulder, Hannah said, “What are you doing here, Ben?”

“I went by your house. You weren’t there. So I came here.”

“Because you assumed I had no life?”

“No because I assumed you’d be working overtime to earn that bonus.”

“Okay,” she allowed with a shrug, “good assumption.”

“So I repeat. What’s wrong?”

She blew out a breath. “I can’t reach the wood clamp.”

He walked closer, every step measured, as if he were crossing a minefield. And hell, maybe he was. After the way they’d left things that morning, not surprising that they were both a little... Defensive.

“This?” He bent down, scooped up the tool and held it out to her.

“Yes. And as long as you’re here, you can put it on while I hold the slat in place.”

“And how do I do that?”

She smiled up at him, surprised he was willing to admit there was something he couldn’t do. Why did that make her like him just a little more?

“Open the mouth of the clamp and set it right here, against the corner of the cabinet. That way it holds the slat in place.”

Frowning to himself, he concentrated on aligning the tool perfectly and when he had it right, she said, “Now tighten it. You don’t have to go nuts, just tight enough to make sure it holds.”

She watched him concentrate and realized that she wanted that focus on her.
