I hauled ass back to HeliTours. Lizzie wanted to drive her own car, but now that I had a solid break in the case, I didn’t have the time to waste. And I was deathly afraid that if I let her out of my sight, Lizzie would think twice about helping me put an end to the madness.

My fear might have been misplaced. I stole glances at Lizzie’s face. I thought I saw strength and resolve.

I parked in the handicap spot again, and we dashed into the building together. Lizzie’s earlier trepidation about being seen together was evidently no longer a factor in her thinking. She had made a choice, and it didn’t look like she had any misgivings.

She dashed behind the operations desk and pulled out the flight notebook for one of their helicopters. I was about to ask if I could help her prepare for takeoff when Fix rounded the corner in a rush.

“There you are,” he said. “Been taking a siesta?” That boyish grin again. I shook my head at him.

He waved a small stack of papers in front of me. “Transaction ledger,” he said. “From your Bitcoin payment from Sevier.”

I took the papers from him. “What am I looking at?”

“This is a rat’s nest,” he said. “They spread the funds out over thousands of different accounts. I have to download the complete blockchain to trace each of them back.”

I shrugged. “Download it, already.”

“You don’t understand. The complete blockchain is an encrypted record of millions of transactions. Downloading it takes hours, Sam. With the internet speed in this building, maybe days.”

“Shit.”

“Right,” Fix said. “Shit. So it’s downloading now. Has been since just after you left. Once I have all the information, I have an app that can parse it in a few minutes. But we’re still hours away from having all the information we need to piece Sevier’s network together.”

I shook my head. It seemed like we were having a hard time catching a break. But all wasn’t lost. The data delay meant that Fix was free to do something else.

“Grab your coat and a pistol,” I said. “We’re taking a field trip.”
