As we discussed in Chapter 4, it's important that students employ words that are accurate and engaging in their topic and concluding sentences. The same is true of the detail sentences they're now creating. If you've provided them with a list of alternatives to overused, bland words such as fun and good, you'll want to remind them to consult the list when revising their detail sentences.

As students move to more sophisticated expository and argumentative writing, try posting lists of alternative words that are geared to those types of writing. For example, students may find themselves repeating, “Some people say . . .” and “Other people say . . .” You can add words to your list that provide students with alternatives—for example, “Advocates claim . . .” and “Opponents believe . . .” You'll find more ideas in Table 8.1, “Argumentative Nouns and Verbs,” in Chapter 8.
