Chapuys was not the only one acting oddly. There was confusion in the deepest parts of the Boleyn camp too, for Norfolk and Wiltshire told Chapuys that they had always opposed marriage between the King and Anne unless sanctioned by Clement. Chapuys thought they were trying to appease him, but if Anne’s father and uncle were saying such things, it was clear the illegality of the King’s second marriage was on many a mind.

Men came to Katherine, from Anne this time, and they carried threats; if Katherine valued Chapuys’ life, he should be prevented from presenting papal bulls or letters to the King. If Chapuys continued, the King would no more be able to guarantee his safety.
