Of course, religion isn’t the only way to manipulate people, and Jones apparently wasn’t particular. Instead of becoming a minister when he graduated from high school, he decided to become a lawyer. He and Marceline therefore moved to Indianapolis so he could study pre-law. It didn’t hold his interest, though, and he soon began attending a Methodist church in preference to his college classes. He impressed the superintendent, and by 1952 he was a student pastor.

Jones then started speaking at revival services where he learned a very important skill: listening to the plights of others. He developed a preaching method in which he would mingle with people in the audience before he got on stage and overhear just enough about their lives to impress them with what he remembered once he got on the platform. Jim knew that beyond anything else, people want others to sympathize with them. So, if before delivering a sermon he happened to hear an elderly woman complaining that she couldn’t pay her electric bill, he would be sure to mention it from the pulpit. Just imagine Jones getting worked up into a frenzy about the downtrodden—and then suddenly pointing to an old lady seated in the pew and declaring, “And Beth! Beth! You better believe God will find a way to pay that electric bill!” Even though all he’d done was exercise a good memory, parishioners who didn’t realize that he’d overheard their conversations would credit him with supernatural revelation.
