* * *

The conspirators’ plan was to kill the Baron and the Yurodivy at the same time. The sleeping Andryonov was shot in the head without problems, but Major Hopak hesitated long enough for the Baron to be awoken by the noise and slash Hopak’s forearm with the shashka he always slept with, and then he slit his throat. He hopped on his white mare and galloped into the night as his former brothers-in-arms shot after him, not daring to pursue him. They feared he would find a way to come back, and were so overwhelmed with dread that they hopped on their horses and rode into the night every which way they could, figuring, without ever talking, that each of them would be harder to track down if alone. The monks raided what the horsemen left behind, and were gone by the morning, in search of another prophet warlord they could leech off. None of them knew that the Baron’s thigh was shattered by one of those blind bullets, and that he rode straight east until he lost enough blood to fall off his white mare, which went on alone, shining in the night like a moonlit ghost.
