JADE HAD TAKEN THE news of Rachelâs pregnancy surprisingly well. He seemed ecstatic at the thought of being a father. He kissed Rachel and he even cried. He took her with him to tell their parents after dinner that very night, and everyone had been happy for them and thrilled about becoming grandparents.
All throughout Rachelâs pregnancy, Jade never missed a doctorâs appointment. He withdrew any and all expectations of her and he even hired someone to clean the house and fix all of the meals. He completely changed during the nine months that she was pregnant with Emily. He never once yelled at her, never hurt her, he didnât even ever seem to get angry with her at all. He insisted that he take care of her, and he treated her like an absolute queen.
Rachel had gotten her hopes up and thought that maybe this baby was saving their marriage. She believed that Jade had changed back into the man that she had fallen in love with. She was extremely happy during her pregnancy, and she had expected that she would stay that way once Emily was born.
When Emily was two months old things began to change with Jade. He fired the housekeeper and expected Rachel to get back to âher jobâ. He did not help her at all with Emily, nor did he intend to allow anyone else to. He said Emily was her responsibility along with the house, and Rachel needed to be an adult and handle her own obligations maturely.
As hard as Rachel tried, she of course couldnât manage to do everything that Jade expected of her. She failed him in his eyes on a daily basis and their marriage became worse than it had been even before she was pregnant. He was not just punishing her for her shortcomings around the house though. He was also jealous of the attention that she was giving to Emily instead of to him. Rachel was not about to do what her mother had done to her and neglect Emily for Jade, so she endured his wrath and continued her attempts at being a good mother for her daughter.
If Jade had ever abused Emily in any way, Rachel would have taken Emily and left him immediately. But in the six and a half years that Emily was around Jade, he never had abused Emily. He was actually a really good father to her once she wasnât a baby anymore. He stayed patient with her, he played with her, he taught her things, he took care of her when she was sick, he took her fun places, he never yelled at her, he never even spanked her. He loved Emily, and Emily adored him. That was what had kept Rachel there with him for so long enduring his abuse.
Jade never abused Rachel when Emily was around either. When Emily was around Jade would put on the loving husband act âand he was a professional at it. Emily believed in his act one hundred percent.
