I TEXT MY mom that I need to go to the library again after school, and find Anders in the auditorium instead. The houselights are up, emphasizing the worn red seat cushions, the aisle carpeting grayed with age and dirt, the runs in the heavy velvet curtain, and the scuffed caramel wood of the stage.

“You know I have rehearsal,” he says, pulling a script out of his backpack.

“You said it was a joke,” I point out.

“Yeah, but I’m still the lead. Can’t it wait until this weekend?”

I picture Madison, tearing at the couch cushion with her teeth, the moon already more than a quarter full, according to the calendar on my phone. “No, it can’t.”

He must see the urgency in my face, though, because his eyes widen and his brows dip in concern.

“Madison is acting super strange, and Cindy is upset about it,” I continue. “And I’m just hoping the family of the last girl to go missing can help.”

“And what do you mean by ‘strange’?”

I’m not sure where to begin, so I just say, “She’s not herself.”

“Well, she’s been through a lot. It must have been a pretty terrifying experience.”

“Yeah, which is why I have to figure out what happened before,” I say. “With the last girl, Rachel.”

He meets my eyes, and I feel a locking sensation—like he’s holding me with his gaze. “Okay. We’ll go.”
