“I’ve been thinking,” Cam said when she and Adam Xu met at the Blue Bird on Saturday morning, to review the plan. “I need you to run backup ops tonight.”

“Backup ops,” he repeated.

“You know… dress in black and hide in the woods outside the frat house with your phone at the ready.”

“You want me to hide in the woods?”

“Well, it’s more like a little patch of trees,” Cam said. “But yeah.”

“You don’t want me to come in with you?” Adam Xu said.

“It’s not that I don’t want you to come in with me. It’s more like… we don’t want to draw any more attention to ourselves than we have to.”

Adam Xu raised his eyebrows.

“I’m just saying… you don’t exactly look like Matt R.”

“And you don’t look like Katie J.”

“No,” Cam said. “But I can pass for a college freshman. And you… look young.”

“Ouch.”

“No offense. Honestly, it’s more that you’re not a girl. They’d probably let you in if you had a vagina, even if you looked thirteen.”

“That’s disturbing,” Adam Xu said.

“Completely,” Cam said. “But the point is, we don’t want to arouse suspicion. We want to extract information, and I think we’ll have our best shot at doing that if I go in alone.”

Adam Xu lifted half a grilled corn muffin from the plate to his mouth. He chewed, swallowed, looked at Cam. “So, you’re offering yourself up as bait?”

Cam pictured herself hooked to the end of a fishing line, dangling over a room full of sharks in white T-shirts. “Yeah. I guess I am.”

“For the record,” he said, “I think that is a really bad idea.”

“Why?” she said.

“Why?”

“I’m bringing my own drink, so it’s not like anyone can roofie me. And I bought some Mace.”

“You bought some Mace?”

“Mace Triple Action Police Pepper Spray,” Cam said. “I found it at Ray’s Hardware, in the home-safety section. And I have a switchblade.”

“A switchblade?” Adam Xu’s eyebrows shot straight to the top of his head. He looked like a cartoon character.

Cam laughed. She reached into her backpack and pulled out the switchblade, lunging across the table like she was about to stab him.

“Jesus!” Adam Xu jumped back in his seat.

“Relax,” Cam said. “It’s not actually a knife.” She pressed the silver button with her thumb. “It’s a comb, see? Isn’t it brilliant? My parents bought it for me at the Spy Museum on our trip to DC when I was in fifth grade. When we went to the US Mint, to see how money gets made, I actually got stopped by security. So if I need a deterrent tonight, I’ll just whip this bad boy out and say, ‘Touch me and I’ll stab you, asshole.’”

Adam Xu shook his head.

“What?” Cam said. “I know what I’m doing. And if we run into trouble, I have all my uncles on speed dial.”

Adam Xu stared at her. “They know about this?”

“Of course not.” Cam shook her head. “They’d never let me do this in a million years.”

“Maybe that should tell you something.”

“Excuse me?” Cam said.

“Maybe this is above your pay grade.
