Chapter Seventeen

Zack woke facedown with a mouth full of sand. He spit it out. As he opened his eyes, he realized that the sand was everywhere. It covered his arms, legs, and clothes. He had no idea how long he had been asleep here—or back at the theater—but based on the grogginess, it must have been a while.

The sound of waves hitting the surf filled the background. “Beach?” he murmured.

A large tree in front of him, however, made him second-guess those suspicions. Its bark had a slight green tint and long branches that stretched out several feet. It was also the largest tree he’d ever seen. Round pink fruits with green stems hung from the branches. Zack scanned the area with a hand over his forehead to shield the bright sun. Three more of those trees scattered throughout the area. Not far off, the witches all lay facedown in the sand.

Selena was the first to wake. She lifted her head and peered around, getting her bearings. She placed a hand on Sebastian’s knee and gave it a shake. He stirred and lifted his upper body, squinting in the bright light. Then he gasped.

Sacha was the next one up. She crawled over and kneeled next to Luther. The vampire was on his back, his eyes barely open. The end of the wooden handle projected from his midsection. Luther was always pale white, but now he had tints of red in his face as well. From the way Sacha was squeezing his hand, Zack could tell those red blotches were a bad sign.

A loud groan came from Uncle Herb, who used his one good hand to pull himself into a sitting position. Zack pushed through the sand and made his way to his uncle’s side. He hooked him under the armpits and helped him lean against the tree.

“Are we on a beach?” Herb asked.

Zack looked back and forth. The area was oval-shaped with water hitting the sand from every direction. “I think we’re on an island,” Zack answered.

Yes, it definitely was an island, albeit a small one. It couldn’t have been bigger than the hotel lobby. How they came here, he could only guess, although it didn’t involve any traditional means of transportation.

An elongated shadow formed in the sand. Zack peered up at Valeria, who hovered three feet in the air. She faced the witches with her back to Zack and Herb.

“Ahh, I see you are all awake,” she said. “Excellent.”

Valeria now had the attention of everyone on this small island.

Only Selena was on her feet. “Where are we?” she asked with what sounded like forced bravado.

“I was exiled for the duration of many lifetimes,” Valeria hissed like an angry snake. “And now, the same fate has fallen upon you. This is your new home.”

“This is the Other World?” Sebastian picked up a handful of sand and let it run through his fingers.

Valeria held her arms out in a welcoming fashion. “It is similar to our own world with various regions and seasonal changes, but no people.
