Chapter 22

The husk of what was once Ciopriani Villa spewed black smoke, blotting out the blue sky. Danny held my arms, keeping me from running straight into the carnage. I knew in my gut that Thea was in that building. I couldn’t get the image of her broken body out of my head…or pinned beneath rubble and burning alive…or gunned down by a fleet of bees. What I wouldn’t give to wrap my hands around an EMP bomb right about now.

Our movement was slow, needing to cut through hoards of drones to make it to the other side of the Villa. My heart plummeted to the ground when there was zero sign of Nick or Thea in the south wing. In fact, it hadn’t looked like they’d ever returned. Their room was still pristinely clean, not at all like Cyclone Thea had been there. I half expected to arrive at their room and see the two of them wrapped around each other. Despite the feigned indifference, I’d heard the telltale sound of Thea’s cries the night before. I’d recognize them anywhere. I knew it was only a matter of time before the two of them worked through their respective damage.

If they hadn’t made it back here, then the only other option was the main building. Hours had passed since Nick took Thea for breakfast. I didn’t know what could have kept them there for all this time, but it couldn’t have been good.

We took the long way around the buildings, carefully approaching the main building from the fields and getting a front-row seat to it being blown to pieces. Fire raged in multiple areas of the building, while others looked completely demolished. Having done their damage, the fleet of drones took to the sky, buzzing towards the horizon. In their place, a small army crept silently over the grounds.

“Because killer robot bees weren’t bad enough,” Danny muttered.

The men were clad in black from head to toe and highly armed. There was nothing amateur about this team. Each held a semi-automatic rifle, with dual pistols on their hips, and a utility strap crossed their torsos with what looked like a candy store’s worth of treats and surprises.

Danny zoomed in his scope and groaned. “Precision grenades, tasers, and…fuck me, are those Tranqs?”

“They aren’t lollipops.” I rubbed at my neck, where I could still feel the dart piercing it. Tranqs meant this was the retrieval team. Fucking Marcello. If I could, I would shoot him again.

“Oz damn it all to hell. How many different ways can we be fucked in one day?” Danny handed me the scope, slapping it into my chest with more force than necessary. “Since when do the Monkeys and the Crows work together? This seriously couldn’t get worse.”

I peered through the lens, adjusting the dial until they came clearly into view. “It gets worse.”

“How can it possibly get worse?”

“See that blue light on the side of the rifle. They’re using an electronic trigger, probably with a target-tracking system too. They wouldn’t even need to seriously aim, and every single shot would be a bullseye.
