Johnson won the Deere on Sunday with a birdie on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff. His 193-yard 6-iron approach from the bunker left of the 18th fairway ran up to less than a foot from the cup for an easy birdie, enabling him to knock off Troy Matteson, whose approach landed 43 feet from the pin. . . . Zach Johnson already was a member of the board of directors of the John Deere Classic. Now he has another title at the tournament: champion.4

After teeing off on the 2nd hole of the sudden-death shoot-out, Zach had found himself squarely in the middle of the bunker, in a hazy dusk, with difficult visibility as he looked for the distant green. Zach, however, allowed himself simply to react to the challenging shot, stepped up to the ball, and went into his routine.

“I saw it bounce on the green,” he recalled, “and hoped it would kick left. I couldn’t see the golf ball.”

But Zach couldn’t miss hearing the roar from the gallery for the “hometown boy” as the ball rolled to less than a foot from the hole. (Zach is from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, about an hour from the Quad Cities.)
