“The unique charm of the animals in a national park lies in their wildness, not their tameness.”

—George Meléndez Wright

As dusk fell in the national park, an excited crowd gathered to watch the evening program. They climbed the wooden bleachers, then blinked as the spotlights illuminated a platform covered with trash and food scraps: bear food. As the audience watched, bears wandered in from the forest, following their noses to the makeshift stage. A few black bears arrived first, then a few more. Even a grizzly showed up.

The curious crowd sat only a few feet from the powerful (and hungry) animals. A young naturalist named George Meléndez Wright shifted in his seat. The spectacle made him uncomfortable. George was a scientist who was studying the U.S. national parks’ wildlife. He thought bears and other animals should be respected as wild creatures, not treated as tame pets to entertain tourists. George’s ideas weren’t popular then, but one day, they would be.
