New Haven is a half hour closer to Leo, with a bus and train line direct to Stamford—the city where the dragon has my family trapped in a cement box.

The new apartment in the Fairhaven neighborhood leaves a lot to be desired. The tall stacked units that Shep and I used to refer to as—soul collectors—are my new home. At least it’s an unshared space. And it’s uninspiring, but a judge will consider it a “permanent residence.”

My surroundings used to be so important to me.

Now I’m in a shoebox apartment, but at least it’s within walking distance to the printing press where I’ll be working. Brooks said it would still keep me connected to books and that I could use the experience on my resume when it was time for me to approach literary agents or publishers again. Plus, it’s an hour ride on the train to reach Leo.

Brooks thought of everything so I didn’t have to. I don’t know how people reengage into society without family or a support system. It’s like trying to play the game of life with a whole set of different rules, and they’re all against you.

Once I’ve made it up the seven flights of stairs with the last box, heaving it onto the floor, I lock the door behind me, slide down the wall to the chipped linoleum floor. I need a break.

But as soon as I stop moving, there’s one thing that plays on my mind more than my new shabby digs.

Kent Bessler’s link.

I just don’t understand why he’d make the effort to come all the way down here and find me…

I open my email, click on it, and fall down the rabbit hole that leads to Kent’s eerie website. He’s not a Real Estate investor, as I originally suspected. That doesn’t surprise me after meeting him though. Nothing about him screams salesman or—I’m here to put you in the 4-bedroom ranch of your dreams.

Nope, Kent Bessler is a paranormal researcher. And he has a whole online show where he livestreams regularly. It says here he began his work after the suspicious disappearance of his stepson in the 1980s. I remember hearing rumblings about the child when I summered in Thompson, Connecticut. I think the boy was nine or ten at the time, rode his bike down some backroad and was never seen again.

Most people assumed he was abducted or attacked by an animal (human or otherwise), his remains dispersed in a way that couldn’t be found. But for some reason Kent has apparently been on a kick for all these years that something otherworldly took him.

He gained some notoriety a number of years back for cleansing a house which was so haunted it rained indoors. There is a very complimentary testimonial from the woman involved—although who knows?—those can always be fake. There’s been nothing of notable mention on his site since then. My guess is he’s a man desperate to make sense of his stepson’s disappearance.

We use different things to self-soothe. Mine just comes in the form of pencils and paper.
