Once they’re gone, my dad does an exaggerated shivery dance. “Need any help cleaning up, Astrid?” he calls.

“No,” she says. “Good night.”

I follow him up the creaking stairs to our depressing, rose-scented room.

“Why were you asking about Ekmanfjorden earlier?” he asks, digging through his backpack and fishing out his toiletry bag.

Turning my back, I open my own suitcase and start to rummage even though there’s nothing I need. “I just thought . . . I don’t know, that it would be good to go back there.”

“Why?” He sits on my bed so I have to look at him.

Because Mamma might be there. The words are on the tip of my tongue, but they’re so ridiculous. How could she possibly be out there with no food or gear or shelter?

“I just want to.” I feel like a petulant, deluded child.

My dad’s mouth thins. “You heard your uncle. There’s no way to get there at this time of year.”

There has to be a way.

“I agreed to take you to Longyearbyen.” There’s a microscopic wobble in his voice. “Not to Ekmanfjorden. It’s way too dangerous, and I don’t want to hear another word about it. Do you understand?”

I grit my teeth and stare at my folded clothing. “Yes.”

Without another word, he heads for the bathroom, and I slump onto my bed. A tiny ping sounds in my backpack—my phone has finally found a signal.

Iris: I just went to bring in your mail and I found a letter in the bush with your name on it.
