Chapter 21

Secret MIssion

“They what?” Lysa yelled, after we recounted the story, “no, no, no, what do you mean they kidnapped him?” Her breathing turned into quick gasps for air.

I didn’t know what to say. I stole a look at Dante, who looked at the ground, and resented him for making me deliver the bad news.

“How did this happen?” Lysa demanded, tears streaming down her face. She approached me quickly, grabbing my shoulders, “Maleek! How did this happen?”

I didn’t say a word, but looked away. She had a right to be angry with me.

But she wasn’t as angry at me as I was with myself.

Chris came up behind her and gently grabbed her, leading her away. She broke down at his touch.

“Maleek, how sure are you it was humans who took him?” Chris asked, eyes narrowing. He seemed paler than usual.

“Well, they had white masks and…,” I thought carefully before proceeding. How much should I reveal? “They got away in a truck. An Aggaelo was following them, though.”

“Ok,” he said, staring at me for a second before looking away, “ok. We’ll call the elders—”

“We have to go after him!” Lysa cried, looking at Chris, “we can’t let him be—”

He pulled her for another hug.

“I know, I know. We’ll get him, trust me. But we need to figure out where he’s at first,” he comforted, “there was nothing any of them could have done.”

He said it to reassure her, but I felt like it was an attack on me.

“Let’s head inside and wait for the others. You guys can come too,” he said, motioning to the twins.

We silently trudged across the grass, following Lysa and Chris.

Chris held it together for her sake. Or at least appeared to. Or was pretending to. What was going through his mind right now?

Chris called the board once we got inside and within the hour, all of them had assembled into Lysa’s living room, all exchanging their condolences and commitments to help in whatever way they could. Chris sat in a love seat next to Lysa. Most of the others sat while I stood next to Allen.

“Leo,” Chris called. Leo stood in the doorway to the kitchen next to Chris. “Can you talk to your contacts at the PD and see what if they had any recent dealings with anybody matching the shadowmen descriptions?”

He nodded silently and headed into the kitchen.

“You going to file a report, Chris?” Kurt asked from across the room. “It would be more helpful than harmful to allow the PD to assist at this point.”

“Agreed,” he replied. “I’ll call them after this meeting.”

“Well, you can’t just tell them that the Shadiem kidnapped Ethan,” Jasmine stated bluntly yet reasonably. “We’ll have to come up with a convincing story.”

He nodded and closed his eyes, forming his hands into a tent. Around the room, Leo was out in the kitchen somewhere. Kurt furrowed his brow as if he was doing some internal calculation. Jasmine leaned forward, waiting for his response. Hannah appeared extremely uncomfortable and looked towards the floor.
