The water pounded down on Arisa as she was swept down the Riverend Falls. It hammered every inch of her body. Yet she had a feeling of weightlessness.
Her stomach lurched into her throat. She was terrifyingly alone. Sheâd been torn from Takaiâs arms almost as soon as theyâd been pulled over the edge of the falls.
She tried to see where she was being pummelled to, but it was impossible. There was nothing but blinding white water and snatches of dark shadows looming beneath her. The darkness approached rapidly, and she could make out the shapes of jagged rocks below. She put her hands out in front of her in an attempt to protect herself. She had just closed her eyes and braced herself when she felt a tugging sensation on her body.
Her eyes sprang open to see Takai, pulling her into his embrace. Enveloping her in his arms, he would take the full force of the impact. She opened her mouth to protest, but it was too late.
As she reached the bottom of the falls, Arisa was thrown out of Takaiâs grip again, flung away from the rocks and plunged deep into the sea.
She spun around. Suspended in the depths, she searched for any light, but there was nothing. Not knowing which way was up or down, she turned in every direction, knowing she would soon run out of breath. She stopped moving, but could feel her body sinking under the weight of her sodden gown. At least she knew which way was down. She looked up â a long way in the distance, she could see a dim light.
She made small kicks upward, her calves burning from exertion. Inching her way away from the darkness, she eventually broke the surface, gasping for breath. A rocky shore stretched out beneath the falls. Somehow, Arisa had to summon enough strength to swim to it. But what about Takai? He was nowhere to be seen.
âTakai!â she shouted, over and over, her voice hoarse from the salt water. She scanned the water for a sign of the Prince, but he was gone.
Her gaze caught on something bobbing in the water. An item that looked out of place near the rocks. Bolstered by adrenaline and her aching need to find Takai, Arisa paddled toward the object, using what little energy she had left. It was a long piece of gold material, snaking its way through the water. The gold scarf she had given him â the same one he had tucked under his armour at the tournament. He must have kept it with him.
Arisa retrieved it from the water and stuffed it into her bodice. Takai believed this scarf had saved him once, that it was his good luck charm. Maybe it would help her find him now.
She dived back under the water. She looked again into the darkness, and this time she could make out the shape of a person, far below. It was Takai â but he was sinking fast. Arisaâs heart constricted â she knew she didnât possess the strength to pull him back up.
