No one spoke in the cafeteria. Their minds were wandering, lost in their own worlds. They had started out as an all-star championship team, unlimited resources, led by a real gladiator general, ready to take on the world—then froze and lost their ball. How’d it happen?

“I liked the guy. He didn’t cave in,” Gorsline said to Bri. He didn’t care about anyone listening in. Cadallo may have been king, but that didn’t mean anything to Gorsline when it came to a free opinion.

“You’re right,” Bri agreed. “I feel bad that we lost him because we didn’t work together. We’ve been through everything about us, and forgot about him at game time. He’s just disappeared.”

Ibrahim nodded.

The three had naturally gravitated to one another.

“I’d just like to know who Gomez really was,” Gorsline mused.

“Is,” Bri corrected.

Ibrahim frowned over his coffee at Mike and shook his head. Discovering the identity of their operator was digging too deep. The whole purpose of the Party was to maintain an effective operation through what was called Triple Cover: a complicated strategy that essentially boiled down to a “nobody knows anything” situation if the cover’s blown.

“I know,” Gorsline said, shrugging. “I’m just saying that the guy had balls. Hell, did you hear him bust the old man’s chops about the cash!”

The three chuckled together.

“I’ll say a prayer for him tonight,” Bri said. “Let’s hope that he’s not hurting too bad, wherever he is.”

Gorsline stared into his coffee. “Well, if we can’t find our man, and soon, Cadallo’s problems will soon become the DEA’s problem no matter how secret he wants to keep this thing. There’s tons of heroin out there that’s threatening to make it here.”

“How will the DEA know?” Ibrahim asked.

“Someone real close is going to tell them.”
