CHAPTER TEN

GIO

To my surprise, Marissa doesn’t pull away. She lets me lead her all the way to the elevator and then up to our apartment. When the door clicks closed behind us though, she finally tugs her arm free from my grasp.

“Your parents shielded you from things,” I begin. “That much is obvious. But I need to know how much you know.”

“Shielded me?” Marissa says. “What the fuck are you talking about? My parents never killed anyone! They would never do that!”

“Maybe not themselves. I’m sure they have someone else to do their dirty work.”

“You’re lying!”

I shake my head. “No Marissa, I’m not. This is how our world works. What exactly did you think your parents’ legal problems were?”

“It’s tax evasion and . . . and we’re struggling financially. . . and . . . I know they’ve done some things that aren’t… aren’t legal . . . but they’ve never murdered anyone!”

Staring at her flushed face, I’m at a loss. She’s so fucking young. Does she really not know what our parents have done? What they do? What I do? The horrors they’ve perpetrated in the name of our legacy?

“The man who attacked you,” I say slowly. “Did you recognize him?”

“What? No! Of course not!”

“His name was Matteo Salvatore. He is the son of Alessandro Salvatore. And Alessandro is the man who turned both our families in to the FBI. He is the reason we’re all in such deep shit. He’s the reason we’re married, Marissa. All of this started with him.”

“I don’t care!” Marissa shrieks. “Right now, I don’t give a shit! You just killed a man and what? You’re telling me it was worth it because his dad screwed over our families? Really?”

“No.” I take a step toward her. “It was worth it because he tried to hurt you. I would have torn him limb from limb if you hadn’t been watching.”

Marissa’s breath hitches. “Why?”

“I didn’t want you to see it,” I say.

“No. Not that.” She shakes her head. “Why do you care if someone hurts me?”

I stare at her. Her eyes search mine. She really doesn’t know. She doesn’t have any fucking idea how often I think about her. How much I already want her. Need her. I would put anyone in the ground for even thinking about harming her. Does she really not see that?

“You’re my wife,” I say, trying to keep my voice even.

“Our marriage isn’t real,” she argues.

I don’t have anything to say to that, but I can’t look away from her. Her lips are parted and her hair is still mussed from that piece of garbage’s grabbing her. Blood trickles down her torn cheek. I’ve never seen her look less composed, and I’ve never wanted her more.

Just the thought of that fucker’s hands on her body has me reeling. I want to hold her. Touch her. Claim every single part of her.

“Why were you following me?” Marissa asks.

I don’t say anything.

“It’s been you for days now, hasn’t it?” she presses.

“What?”

“For days, I’ve had this feeling someone is watching me,” she says.
