Looking frail and scared, Oscar and Vera Fitzgerald were escorted to a conference room in the hotel and offered coffee or bottles of water. Both declined. Having introduced Sergeant Boone to both Jimmie Gibbs and Hannah Martin, Kruger followed the elderly couple into the room.

Kruger, as was his habit, included Boone in every aspect of questioning the Fitzgeralds.

“Mister Fitzgerald, my name is Sean Kruger, I am a federal agent with the Defense Intelligence Agency. Next to me is Sergeant Robert Boone with the Chicago Police Department. Next to him is one of my fellow agents, James Gibbs. This is Hannah Martin, an attorney with the Department of Justice. She’s here to help you understand your rights as witnesses. I want you and your wife to understand neither of you are in trouble. We appreciate your cooperation and any information you can provide. Is it all right if we call you Oscar?”

The older man nodded. “We’ll do our best.”

“Thank you. Sergeant Boone, do you want to start?”

Boone smiled and said, “Oscar, tell us what you saw in the parking lot.”

“My wife and I were getting ready to board the shuttle to O’Hare when we saw a man walk out of the hotel in—” He turned to his wife. “What did you call it, Vera, a huff?”

She nodded. “He acted like he had been holding his breath and could suddenly breathe.”

Oscar continued, “Anyway, he started toward the parking lot and was walking so fast, he almost ran.”

Vera said, “That’s when we saw the other man throw down a cigarette. Such a nasty habit. He started walking fast, following the man who was running.”

Kruger asked, “What did this man look like?”

The elder gentleman turned to Kruger. “Tall, mid-forties or early fifties, dark hair, dark glasses, so I didn’t see his eyes. As he walked away from us, he pulled a pistol from his belt. It was a small caliber Ruger with a suppressor.”

Boone frowned. “How could you tell it was a Ruger, Oscar?”

“I used to work for Cabela’s before they were bought out by Bass Pro. I was the head buyer in their gun department.”

Jimmie Gibbs offered the picture of Thorton and Peters at the campaign rally with Annika Belsky standing beside them. He showed it to the Fitzgeralds, “Is he in this picture?”

Vera gasped, and Oscar nodded. “Yes, that’s him.” He turned to his wife. “What’s wrong, Vera?”

“She pointed at the woman in the picture. “That’s the person who drove the Camry and picked up the man with the gun.”

Kruger smiled. “I don’t suppose you remember the license plate number, do you?”

She smiled. “I may be getting old, Agent Kruger, but my mind is perfect.” She told him the number.
